It seems the Empire has a bit of a tradition of armies turning 'renegade' (Onearm's Host, the Bonehunters, Malazans under Korbolo Dom's command during the Whirlwind, Paran's army disappearing, and now the Sixth), but only one of them (unless you count Dom's) actually had the balls to do it for real.
